To retrieve additional items, either Web content or files from your local hard drive, the item must be in the Retrieval View of your WebCD project. This lesson shows you how to add URLs for additional items to the Retrieval View and takes you through re-starting retrieval in order to retrieve new items.
If you . . . | To do this lesson . . . |
did Lessons 1 and 2 and have not closed the WebCDTutorial project | go directly to number one (1) below. |
did Lessons 1 and 2, but have closed the WebCDTutorial project | open the WebCDTutorial.wcd project. |
did not sequentially do Lessons 1-2 | open the Lesson3.wcd project. |
To open a project that is not listed on the Startup dialog, double-click More Files. Then open the appropriate directory and double-click the .wcd file to open the project. If you are already in the WebCD Packager application, select Open Project from the File menu. Note: The tutorial lessons projects are not available with demo versions of the WebCD Packager.

Reasons for adding another URL: (1) You may wish to retrieve pertinent Web content from additional URLs, perhaps partner companies, or general information Web sites, (2) if you have a very large Web site, you may choose to retrieve only specific directories rather than the entire Web site. In this case, you would need to add the URL for each directory separately.
Besides the tutorial Web content, lets retrieve the home page from another company's
Web site. To do this, we need to add the URL for that other company's home page to the
Retrieval View. As an example, we will retrieve Space Imaging's home page. Add the URL
for Space Imaging's home page to the Retrieval View--in the Retrieval View,
right-click to the right of the URL
list (that is, do not click on an URL but on the empty space to the right of the URL list). This displays the
Retrieval View shortcut menu. Select New URL to display the New URL dialog box.
Type the following URL into the URL text box:
Click OK. The URL is added and, by default, is set for retrieval. |
Find Space Imaging's host icon in the Retrieval View (see picture at right).
Right-click the host icon and select Do Not Retrieve from the URL shortcut menu.
This changes the properties for the host so that only Space Imaging's home page
(not the entire Web site) will be retrieved. Note: Make sure Space Imaging's document icon ![]() |
Besides Web pages, you can also retrieve non-Web based documents, such as:
Add the readme.txt file into the Retrieval
View. To do this, pull down the File menu and select New
and then URL to display the New URL dialog box. Type the following "file
URL" into the URL text box:
file:///c:\Program Files\MarketScape\WebCD Packager\readme.txt Note: If you did not install WebCD Packager in the default location, the URL will be file:///install-path\readme.txt, where install-path is the path where you installed the WebCD Packager software.
You can also add files from your local hard drive or network to the to the Retrieval View by dragging and dropping from the Windows Explorer: |
![]() |
(a) | Open the Windows Explorer (Right-click the Start button on the Windows 95 Taskbar and select Explore.) |
![]() |
(b) | In Windows Explorer, move to the following location:
c:\Program Files\MarketScape\WebCD Packager\Projects\Tutorial\ Note: If you did not install WebCD Packager in the default location, the location will be install-path\Projects\Tutorial\, where install-path is the path where you installed the WebCD Packager software. |
![]() |
(c) | Drag the file called minishow.ppt into the Retrieval View. |
![]() |
(d) | Drag the Data Sheets directory into the Retrieval View. When you drag and drop a directory, all directories and files in that directory are included. |
Continue retrieval by clicking the Start Retrieval
button. |
|
Choose Retrieve only new documents (faster). Click Retrieve
Now to re-start retrieval. Newly added http: and file: URLs,
as well as URLs that were not retrieved earlier are now retrieved.
This could take from 3 to 6 minutes.
Note: When you turn on retrieval for a file, as we did for the Space Imaging home page, other files, commonly images, are sometimes retrieved. Any files necessary to display the page are retrieved.
Upon completion, the last line of the Retrieval Results window displays the completion date and time. Close the Retrieval Results window. |
Right-click in the Retrieval View to again display the Retrieval View shortcut menu.
Click Display
Titles to display titles for all the retrieved URLs. Keep in mind that if a title was not entered by the Web
site creator, or if the file is not retrieved, the URL will still be displayed.
Each of the Packager "views" can be resized by pointing to the border and dragging the window to the desired size. Resize the Retrieval View to see the longer titles. |
